Sports Med Fellows 2008-2009


Stacy Beaty, M.D.
Stacy Beaty Dr. Beaty graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston where he was selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Beaty completed his residency at the same institution in 2008, during which he was awarded the Residency Scholarship Award for four years. During residency, he assisted team physicians in caring for Rice University and multiple professional teams in Houston. Research interests included exploring options to improve osteoporosis treatment after fragility fractures.

Interests outside of medicine include baseball, which he played in college, golf, hunting, fishing and running. Dr. Beaty comes to Spartanburg with his wife, Susan, and their two children, Avery and Savannah.



Samuel C.B. Coy, M.D.
Sam Coy Dr. Coy graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2003. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the University of Chicago in 2008, where he assisted team physicians for local high schools, colleges, and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Dr. Coy’s research interests have focused on gene therapy in a rotator cuff injury model. He was an Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Resident Research Symposia Winner in 2008. 

A former college swimmer, Dr. Coy enjoys playing tennis and spending time outdoors. Originally from Kentucky, he comes to Spartanburg with his wife, Brooke.



Brett Franklin, M.D.
Jay Rodrigo Dr. Franklin is graduate of the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, where he was selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as a third year student. He subsequently completed his residency at the Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, SC.  While in residency he was selected to participate in the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA-OREF-Zimmer) Resident Leadership Forum.

His research to date has involved surgical fixation of pediatric femur fractures as well as studying the effects of tourniquet use in orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Franklin and his wife Angie are excited to remain in the upstate an additional year with their four children, Eli, Avery, Amelia, and Elsie.



Freddy S. Song, M.D.
Steven SingletonDr. Song graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center, also in Philadelphia. He has research publications in a number of peer reviewed journals and has had several abstracts accepted to national meetings.

He is an avid soccer player, who captained the Colgate University Men’s Varsity team and was the player of the year in the Patriot League Conference in 1997. His other interests include golf, mountain biking, and jazz. Dr. Song comes to Spartanburg with his wife, Julie, who is also a native of the Philadelphia region.



Gregory A. Stranges, M.D.
Dr. Jerry Youkey Dr. Stranges finished both his medical school and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. Prior to arriving in Spartanburg, he completed a fellowship in knee and shoulder reconstruction at the University of Toronto. To date, Dr. Stranges' research interests have included acromioclavicular joint dislocations and partial tears of the biceps tendon.  

In his free time, Dr. Stranges enjoys sports such as golf and hockey. He is joined by his wife, Rhiana, and daughter, Isabella, and they look forward to their time in South Carolina.



Brett A. Sweitzer, M.D.
Sean McEnroe Dr. Sweitzer is a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine, where he was selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Sweitzer completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Emory University.

While at Emory, Dr. Sweitzer received several awards, including the 2007 Harley and Betty Baxter SOA Resident/Fellow Award at the Eastern and Southern Orthopaedic Societies’ combined meeting. His research interests have focused on shoulder arthroplasty and bone grafting techniques, as well as production of an instructional video for the AAOS.

Dr. Sweitzer was a wrestler at Brown University and now enjoys lifting weights, skiing, and spending time with his family.  Dr. Sweitzer comes to Spartanburg with his wife, Shannon, and their two children, Chloe and Bennett.
