Dr. James Silliman Leads Athletic Trainer Educational Symposium

Dr. James Silliman, President of Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas, and the Program Medical Director, Musculoskeletal Health and Wellness Institute within the Greenville Hospital System lead an educational session yesterday for the more than 50 Greenville Hospital System Athletic Trainers who serve middle schools and high schools throughout the Upstate of South Carolina.

Dr. Silliman lectured on the anatomy of the shoulder and proper examination techniques for this complicated joint. The group also had the unique opportunity to dissect cadaveric shoulder specimens within the Orthopaedic Research Foundation of the Carolina’s (ORFC) Bioskills Surgical Laboratory, located on the Patewood Campus of Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center.

“We were very excited to host Dr. Silliman and this enthusiastic group of athletic trainers, offered Gary Hyman, CEO of the ORFC. Through this unique hands-on opportunity within our lab allows education to go beyond the typical lecture and the knowledge level of these trainers will be improved exponentially”

The GHS Athletic Trainer Network works in conjunction with Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine physicians to provide care for high school athletes. This team approach facilitates care and communication throughout the diagnosis, treatment and therapy phases of treatment thereby speeding recovery and return to play.
