Reconstructive Knee & Shoulder Surgery and Sports Medicine Fellowship
ACGME ACCREDITED
The Steadman Hawkins' Fellowship Program in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine provides a broad clinical sports medicine and shoulder/elbow experience for physicians. The program provides an opportunity for fellows to hone their orthopaedic surgery skills and to pursue their interests in orthopaedic research.
The program offers expertise in the following disciplines:
-
shoulder/elbow arthroscopy/reconstruction
- knee arthroscopy reconstruction and cartilage reconstruction
- foot/ankle arthroscopy/reconstruction
- hip arthroscopy.
The program is led by Dr. Richard J Hawkins, who relocated
to South Carolina after working for 17 years in Vail, Colorado with Dr. Richard
J Steadman. Dr. Hawkins has trained more than 140 fellows throughout his career.
He continues to be a team physician for the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies.
Each fellow will spend time both in the Steadman Hawkins' Clinic offices and in the operating room with staff members to gain a varied and thorough clinical sports medicine experience. Fellows will work with several area high schools and a university, and will assist in weekly training rooms and help provide game/event coverage.
Each fellow is expected to initiate two research projects that may be subsequently presented at a national meeting and/or published in an orthopaedic journal. Opportunities exist for collaboration with the bio-engineering department at Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. One to two months of dedicated research time is made available during the year for each fellow.
Weekly conferences, often held in conjunction with the Vail and Denver offices via the Internet, provide education and insight into the diagnosis and treatment of upper and lower extremity disorders. Each fellow is expected to coordinate a grand rounds presentation and to participate and lead discussion in journal clubs, wet labs, and teaching rounds. The Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas hosts one to two national meetings a year, in which fellow leadership is required.
